A one-man tour de force starring a lion of the Canadian stage, Shylock directly addresses anti-Semitism in Merchant of Venice. In a stunning performance, Glen Gaston plays an actor who had been performing Shylock in a fictional production of Merchant of Venice just shut down over accusations of anti-Semitism. Over the course of a thrilling 80-minute monologue, the actor holds a “talkback” with the audience to defend his production, asking: “Isn’t it the job of theatre to provoke you and your job to figure out what it’s all about?”

This award-winning play challenges students to make up their own minds about controversial art and walking the fine line between offensiveness and censorship. At the theatre or in your school, Shylock is a great play to start a dialogue about art.
